What if you close the gap? EBITDA projection with myCFO

Indicative 3-year scenario progressively closing the distance to your sector’s median and top quartile.

Only 41.9% of Spanish companies created in 2018 were still active five years later (INE, Harmonized Business Demography). Being “average” is not being safe: the average includes the ones that disappear.

    Where these numbers come from

EBITDA margins. We use the medians and quartiles (P25/P75) of the ratio “Gross operating result / Net turnover” from the Bank of Spain Sector Ratios database (RSE 2024, with the European Committee of Central Balance Sheet Data Offices), for companies below €50M in revenue: the typical SME in each sector, not an average distorted by large corporates. Each sector aggregates between 1,600 and 82,000 real companies.

Productivity. Turnover per person employed for your branch of activity in Spain according to Eurostat (Structural Business Statistics, 2023). This is NACE-section-level data: a branch reference, not a fine-grained subsector figure.

Leverage. We assess your financial debt/EBITDA ratio against the thresholds banks and supervisors use: below ~2.5x is considered comfortable; the ECB classifies exceeding 4x as a “leveraged transaction” (Guidance on Leveraged Transactions, 2017); and the Federal Reserve notes that exceeding 6x “raises concerns for most industries” (SR 13-3). As a reference, the aggregate ratio of Spanish companies stands at ~3.3x (Bank of Spain, 2025).

Why we are demanding. We compare you against your sector’s top quartile —the leaders—, not just the median. The reason is simple: according to INE, only 41.9% of companies created in 2018 were still active five years later. A sector’s median includes the companies that will not be here tomorrow; the leaders set the standard of the ones that will.

Limits. This is an orientation, not an audit report: your accounting may differ from the database criteria (accounting EBITDA, no IFRS 16 adjustments), some sectors have particularities (energy and real estate, flagged in the data itself) and productivity is branch-level. Getting from “where am I” to “what do I do” is exactly our job.
